10+ AI-Based Tools for Nonprofits

Artificial Intelligence

From transforming administrative work to improving inefficiencies, artificial intelligence (AI) can do it all and has several features that could benefit nonprofits.

There are several free AI tools nonprofits can use today to improve operations and gain more time to focus on their mission and impact.

Two main types of AI are in use today: generative AI and predictive AI. Generative AI creates text and generates images, videos, and more, while predictive AI analyzes historical data and patterns to make predictions.

While AI has great potential, AI tools are experimental and occasionally make mistakes.  Always proofread and fact-check statements to confirm the tools are accurate.

Here are 11 free AI tools for nonprofits:

Free Tools for Copywriting and Communication

ChatGPT is a generative AI that can create copy based on user prompts. Nonprofits can use ChatGPT to generate content like newsletters, blog posts, and social media posts. ChatGPT can also assist in writing grant proposals and personalize communication and thank-you notes for donors. Always review the copy suggestions from ChatGPT and personalize them to your nonprofit's voice. ChatGPT is a starting point for copy, not the finish line.

Consider prompts like: Create a friendly thank you note for (Organization Name's) fundraising drive.

Tip: the more details you provide ChatGPT in your prompt, the more personalized the response will be.

Hemingway Editor uses AI to proofread and check grammar. Nonprofits can use Hemingway Editor to improve the readability and grammar of written content

Free Tools for Data Insights and Analyses

Tableau is an AI tool for data visualization. Nonprofits can create interactive and shareable dashboards to present data and insights. These charts can easily complement an annual report or a standalone social media post.

Free Tools for Marketing and Social Media

Hootsuite is a complete social media management platform. Nonprofits can associate and run all their accounts through Hootsuite, collecting vital analytical information.

Hootsuite features OwlyWriter AI, which can generate captions and post ideas. To ensure the greatest reach, these posts should be personalized to your organization's voice.

Canva is a creative asset generator. From infographics to GIFs and videos, Canva makes content creation simple. Nonprofits can use Canva to create interesting graphical elements for social media, annual reports, flyers, and other internal and external communications. Canva has AI features to assist with photo editing and content creation.

Free Tools for Project Management to Save Time and Effort

Trello is project management software. Nonprofits can use Trello to improve the efficiency of their team. From organizing tasks to managing projects and promoting team collaboration, Trello is a helpful tool for staying on top of tasks and increasing team efficiency

Slack is a workplace messenger app that unites your workplace onto one platform and allows for individual, team, and group messaging. Nonprofits can use Slack instead of traditional phone numbers to unify and organize communication.

Free Tools to Survey Supporters

Google Forms lets your organization create interactive forms. From collecting volunteer and donor information to organizing sign-ups and other administrative tasks, nonprofits can create several types of interactive forms.

SurveyMonkey is a survey platform. Nonprofits can easily use the site to create and distribute surveys and collect feedback.

What our clients say

We needed a platform to make sales online and to track and display ads for our sponsors. GiveSmart was perfect. We ended up making close to $15,000 more than we had hoped for. Definite better ROI than we anticipated. The interface is easy to use and provides plenty of options to get help if needed.

The Rotary Club of South Whidbey Island

Using GS has created ease in auction bookkeeping, payments, and generating post-event thank you/tax letters. While we were online during COVID, our interactions with our GiveSmart via phone, email, and zoom were seamless. A representative always got back to us within the day. I would recommend GiveSmart to anyone doing a large online event.

Hope Chest for Breast Cancer

GiveSmart is easy to use and ideal for virtual events and can be used for in-person events to manage the silent auction, seating charts, and check-in to the event. Being able to use the platform for unlimited events within the contract year is very useful and being able to add other users and volunteers for different levels of access is helpful as well.
