Challenge

Solution

West Angeles Church of God in Christ was founded in 1943 to spread the word of God. With this in mind, Bishop Charles E. Blake addresses his 24,000-person congregation every week. A desire to spread the good word even further led Rev. Blake to consider harnessing the power of digital communication and fundraising. Wanting assistance, West Angeles Church contacted [GiveSmart] for help!

[GiveSmart] understood that the goal was ultimately to spread their message to as many people as possible and make giving easy. With this in mind, we began creating a strategy. Many of their congregation members could not make it to church due to health difficulties, location issues, or even Los Angeles traffic! The church added a ticker to the bottom of their live broadcast videos, allowing viewers to donate or share West Angeles Church’s broadcast with their friends. This ticker stated, “To sow a seed today, text WESTA to 41444,” and created a way for those who could not physically make it to church to tithe. This solution pleased both the church and the congregation, who wanted to give but could not from a remote location.

Impact

The partnership with [GiveSmart] was a success. Through easy social sharing, West Angeles shared their message with even more people and gave those who could not physically attend church a way to give back easily. So far, West Angeles Church of God in Christ has raised over 2.6 million and engages with over 1,500 people through text messages every week. They have been able to spread the word more effectively, but they have also been gifted with enough funding through donations to build a new Family Life Center and new units of low-income and senior housing in the community!
